(2024-08-30) Nine delegates from Local 1784 recently attended the IAFF Convention in Boston. There were over 4,000 delegates, alternates, and guests from IAFF Locals from across the United States and Canada conducting the business of the IAFF. The IAFF Convention is held every other year and is designed for members to chart the course of the IAFF for the next two years.
Of the 65 resolutions considered by the delegates, here are some of the highlights of the resolutions approved:
- Childhood Cancer Research related to exposure from firefighter parents
- Establishing a Program for Firefighters in Need of a Donor
- Establish a program to have Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from the IAFF to assist in NTSB investigations
- Prioritize Early Access to Medicare for Firefighters
- Pursue federal funding for cancer research
- Fight Against Private Sector Firefighters Encroaching on Existing IAFF Jurisdictions
- Created the Firefighter Fidelity Fund to represent members charged with criminal acts during their work

Delegates attending the IAFF Convention also heard from Vice President candidates J.D. Vance (R) and Tim Walz (D).
IAFF General President Edward Kelly of Boston Local 718 and IAFF General Secretary/Treasurer Frank Lima of Los Angeles Local 112 were re-elected to their respective roles along with IAFF 14th District Vice President Danny Todd of Memphis Local 1784.
Representing Memphis Local 1784 at the Convention were Thomas Malone, Todd Conklin, Matthew Tomek, Chris McKendry, Jeremy Chastain, Jeff Culp, Hugh Doyle, Chris Bellefontaine, and Joe Norman.
